Why Pittsburgh Is Harder Than Most Places

This region combines three things that are individually manageable and collectively brutal for retaining walls.

The terrain is steep. Half the residential property in Allegheny County is cut into a hillside, which means the walls holding those cuts are structural rather than decorative.

The soil holds water. Clay-rich shale across much of the county loses strength dramatically when saturated, and saturated soil pushes with several times the force of dry soil.

Then winter arrives. Water in the ground freezes, expands, drives the wall outward, thaws, and the wall does not come back. Repeat that fifteen or twenty times and a wall that was plumb when it was built is measurably out.

Almost every failed wall we are called to look at failed because of water. Not because the block was wrong, not because it was too tall, and not because it wore out. That shapes how we build and how we diagnose.

How We Work With People

We tell you what we find, including when it is good news. If your wall has moved half an inch in fifteen years and is not going anywhere, we will say so. We would rather give you an honest assessment and be the people you call in three years than sell you a rebuild you did not need.

We name the cause, not just the symptom. Every estimate says what caused the problem and what we are doing about it. Resetting a wall face without fixing why it moved is money spent twice, and we will not quote it that way.

Drainage is in the price, not an upgrade. It is the single most important part of the job and the most common thing left out of a cheap quote. Ours includes it.

Everything in writing. Scope, materials, height, drainage detail and access assumptions, before anyone starts. No verbal figures that grow.

What We Do

We handle retaining wall repair and new wall installation across every common material — segmental block, poured concrete, natural stone and boulder, and timber and railroad tie.

We also handle the two things most wall contractors treat as somebody else’s problem: drainage and waterproofing, and wall anchors and slope stabilization for properties where the hillside itself is moving. On the commercial side we take on parking lot, access drive and multi-unit wall work.
